So today I learned that I may actually have some racial diversity in my classroom! For the past two years my class (and my entire school) has been 100% African-American. Today one of my students told me a secret: he's half Asian.
My first reaction was one of surprise as he actually used the word "Asian" rather than Chinese -- which is the only form of Asian that most of my school population seems to know. He then added: "Don't tell anyone. I only told you because I can tell that you're half-Asian too." Sadly, when I asked from where his Asian half had descended he shrugged and said he didn't know.
I don't know why exactly, but this excites me.
